The Eeect of the Al Thickness on the Performance of Nb/al/alo X /al/nb Superconducting Tunnel Junctions Used as X-ray Detectors

چکیده
Nb/Al/AlO x /Al/Nb Superconducting Tunnel Junctions (STJ's) have been studied extensively as photon detectors , because of their intrinsic capabilities in terms of charge output and energy resolving power. A critical element in such an STJ is the aluminum layer which separates the superconductive Nb from the AlO x tunnel barrier. In this paper, the role of this Al layer is investigated. The behavior of high quality STJ's, diiering by the Al thickness only, is analyzed. Five thicknesses ranging between 5 nm and 120 nm are considered. The charge output, the energy linearity and resolution for the case of 6 keV x-ray photons are discussed.

Superconducting high-resolution X-ray detectors for metalloprotein L-edge spectroscopy
Superconducting tunnel junctions (STJs) can be used as high-resolution energy-dispersive X-ray detectors. STJ detectors are based on the measurement of an increased tunneling current from excess charge carriers that are excited above the superconducting energy gap by the absorption of an X-ray. Nb-based STJ detectors have a theoretical energy resolution limit below 5 eV FWHM for X-ray energies ...

The Nb-based superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) tunnel junctions have been broadly used in many applications. The critical current density ( ), one of the most important parameters of SIS tunnel junction, is usually controlled by the oxygen exposure ( 2) of the Al oxidation process. R. E. Miller et al. demonstrated the relation between and oxygen exposure using the SNEP process. Howe...

A process for fabricating high-quality Josephson junctions and DC SQUIDs on basis of Nb/Al technology has been developed. DC magnetron sputtering is used for the deposition of the metal layers and the barrier is formed by thermal oxidation of the Al-layer. The junction area of 5 microns x 5 microns is obtained using anodisation. Three types of Josephson tunnel junctions have been prepared: stan...
متن کاملThe oxidation state at tunnel junction interfaces
The oxidation state at the interfaces of Nb/Al–AlOx/Pb junctions is discussed. Conductance–voltage curves below and above the superconducting temperature suggest tunneling conduction, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows the existence of a thin AlOx layer at the Nb/Al interface. We demonstrate that at the usual 10 7 Torr range of base pressures in the sputtering chamber, this is due to ...

We report progress on the microlithographic fabrication of Nb-Ta-AI-AlOx-AI structures designed for x-ray detection. These structures use bandgap engineering both for quasiparticle trapping to increase the collection efficiency and to prevent quasiparticle diffusion out through the leads. Non-standard tunnel junction geometries are used to reduce the magnetic field needed to suppress the Joseph...
